An Organisation That Walks Its Talk
It would be a profound contradiction for an organisation committed to women's empowerment to replicate hierarchical, top-down structures internally. From its founding, MASUM has been deliberate about building an organisational culture consistent with its values.
This means democratic decision-making, transparent financial management, clear grievance mechanisms, and active investment in staff development — particularly of women from rural and marginalised backgrounds who join as field workers and grow into leaders.
A Second Line of Leadership
One of MASUM's most distinctive organisational commitments is to building a second line of leadership. The founders have consciously avoided creating an organisation dependent on their own personalities or networks. Staff at every level are supported to develop capabilities that could take them — and the organisation — forward independently.
This is feminist governance in practice: power that builds more power rather than hoarding it.
Financial Transparency and Accountability
MASUM publishes annual reports, audited accounts, and FCRA statements. Funders, community members, and the public have access to information about how money is raised and spent. This is not merely legal compliance — it is a statement about the kind of organisation MASUM wants to be.
Internal Committees for Internal Justice
Consistent with its work on gender justice, MASUM has workplace committees that handle grievances, prevent sexual harassment, and ensure that staff rights are respected. The organisation that advocates for justice externally holds itself to the same standard internally.
An Evolving Institution
After nearly four decades, MASUM is not a static organisation. It has grown, adapted, faced challenges, made mistakes, and learned from them. What has remained constant is a commitment to the communities it serves and to the feminist values that animate its work. In a landscape littered with organisations that lost their way, that consistency is its own form of achievement.
